Working on it

I'm getting the mail done. In the meantime, enjoy these fabulous 80s pants! This pattern is for sale on Etsy and the seller promises that these are "The most 80s pants available." Truth in advertising.

I had parachute pants. There is no shame...

How did you know!? Yes, I did confess to it above and then thought better of it. I got them at Neiman Marcus. On the sale rack. It took me literally two decades to finally surrender them to the local thrift store. I still miss them.

There are no secrets on the Internet. I love that you hung on to your 80s pants. I've shoved all mine to the back of my mind, and once in a while they surface to consciousness and make me shudder.

But thinking about it, they were all pretty fascinating to a 20-year-old who still didn't know how to dress herself. All those snaps, buttons, pleats, pockets, gathers and patterns! So much going on! My parachute pants had adjustable ankle snaps--go tight, loose, or don't snap them at all--let 'em flap in the breeze around your shoes. So much choice.

I haven't even dealt with shoulder pads. Shoulder pads in everything, including T-shirts. I took so many shoulder pads out, having line-backer shoulders already. I never came up with a project for the discarded pads. They're in the landfill now. Even without them, shirts had really broad shoulders and long sleeves that flapped around my lower arms. Not body conscious.

Do you think we were dressing in reaction to impending nuclear war? Dress in neon colors like it's the end of the world! Like you all ran off and joined the circus! Wear your hair like a giant helmet, duck and cover!

You may deny this, but seriously, I don't think we dressed like this. Maybe I am in heavy denial, but I remember thinking these clothes were hideous. You did NOT dress like this. Ingrid did NOT dress like this. I will admit I had some moments of treacherous hair, meaning my hair caused treachery to me. And only because I had gotten it cut by a hair person who had fallen prey to these...these...styles. Yes, we might have had "balloon" pants. I prefer to think of them as well, not balloon pants. But I think we wore them with panache...omg, panache is a very 80s word. OK, we wore them incongruously, ironically, oppositionally, before it was a "disorder". Tell me I am not delusional. Please!?

We didn't! I'm sure we found much of 80s fashion completely horrifying. I'm actually quite fond of most of my wardrobe from that era, with a few exceptions (pleated, narrow-legged red chords--not a good choice). It was fun and circus-like, but also lots of classic clothes from the 30s through 50s. Lots of men's smoking-jacket items, 30s dresses, cut on the bias for figuring-flattering looks and nice patterns, cocktail dresses, vintage hats, colorful jewelry. Good stuff! OK, the time I cut off ALL my hair to 1/4-inch. That was probably not my best look...

I meant to tell you you were very brave with the hair. I didn't think it was that bad but I remember your mom did not like it, not one bit!
